Tennessee Government Management Institute
Since the year 2000, the Tennessee Government Management Institute (TGMI) has trained mid-level managers within state government who have program or organizational responsibility. TGMI addresses the duality of being a middle manager. They are accountable to senior executives regarding initiatives and assigned staff; they are also responsible for helping front line staff to see their employer’s vision and perform tasks accordingly. TGMI serves to develop and promote the abilities of these leaders.
Each year, TGMI provides leadership training for up to 65 participants. We acknowledge the importance of technical skills without diminishing the importance of human relations. Facilitators come from across the state (and sometimes from other states) to share their expertise. As a bonus, each participant is able to learn from the experiences of other leaders in similar positions.
At the conclusion of the two-week institute, graduates leave with new tools of the trade, the acquaintance of new colleagues, and an abundance of genuine friends. TGMI alumni become integral to the state government plans for retention and succession. They often return to attend another program – the Tennessee Government Executive Institute.
